What is Photography?



            Photography is the art, science, and practice of capturing light to create images using a camera. It involves recording visual information onto a light-sensitive medium, such as film or a digital sensor, to produce a photograph. This medium can capture a moment in time, convey emotions, document events, or express artistic visions. Photography encompasses a wide range of styles and purposes, from portrait and landscape photography to documentary and commercial photography, and can be both a hobby and a professional pursuit.

Image 01(Tea Plantation)

             I took this photo at Hatton Maussakale estate. The photo shows a lush green tea plantation with rows of tea plants in the foreground. Behind the plantation, there are misty hills covered with trees, set against a clear blue sky. The scene captures a serene and vibrant natural landscape.

 History

           Tea cultivation in Sri Lanka began in the 1860s after a devastating coffee rust disease wiped out coffee plantations. James Taylor, a British planter, is credited with starting the tea industry in 1867 in the Kandy region.

            By the late 19th century, tea had become a major export product, and the industry expanded rapidly.

Geographical Distribution

            Central Highlands: The most famous tea-growing regions are in the central highlands, including Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, and Uva.

Low Country: Tea is also grown in the low country regions such as Galle and Ratnapura. Low-grown teas tend to be stronger and darker.

Mid Country: Areas like Kegalle and Matale produce teas with characteristics between high and low-grown teas.

         This sunrise photo was taken around 6 am at Sri Padasthan. The photo shows a beautiful landscape during sunset, with the sun partially hidden behind a hill. The scene includes a hilly area covered with trees and some buildings in the distance.          The sunrise in Sri Lanka is a breathtaking experience, often regarded as one of the most beautiful sights on the island.


Location 

Sri Lanka is an island nation located south of India, surrounded by the Indian Ocean. This coastal position provides numerous stunning viewpoints for watching the sunrise.

Topography 

The diverse landscapes, including beaches, hills, and mountains, offer various settings to enjoy the early morning light.

 Best Locations for Sunrise

Hikkaduwa: Famous for its beautiful beaches, Hikkaduwa offers spectacular sunrises over the ocean.

Galle: The historic city of Galle has stunning coastal views, particularly from the fort.

Ella: Surrounded by lush tea plantations and hills, Ella provides breathtaking sunrise views from locations like Little Adam’s Peak and Ella Rock.

Sigiriya: Watching the sunrise over the ancient rock fortress of Sigiriya is a popular experience, with the surrounding landscape bathed in golden light.

Nuwara Eliya: The highlands offer serene sunrise views, especially from Lake Gregory or the surrounding tea estates.

           This photo was taken Galleface in Colombo. The photo shows a coastal cityscape with tall modern buildings lining the shore.  Galle Face Green is a prominent urban park and promenade located in the heart of Colombo, the capital city of Sri Lanka. It's a popular spot for both locals and tourists, offering a blend of history, recreation, and stunning coastal views.

 Historical Background

Origins: Galle Face Green was originally laid out by the Dutch in the 17th century as a strategic space for firing cannons, protecting the fort against potential invasions. It was later expanded by the British in the 19th century.

Colonial Era: Under British rule, it served as a recreational ground for the British elite, used for horse racing, golf, and polo. It was officially established as a public space in 1859 by the then-Governor, Sir Henry George Ward.

Name: The name “Galle Face” is believed to derive from the location's view towards Galle, a city to the south of Colombo.

 Location and Features

Location: Situated along the Indian Ocean, Galle Face Green stretches for about 500 meters along the coast, adjacent to the Galle Face Hotel and the Colombo Fort area.

Size: It covers an area of around 5 hectares (12 acres), making it one of the largest open spaces in Colombo.

Promenade: The promenade runs parallel to the coast, offering a wide pathway for walking, jogging, and recreational activities.

                I took this photo at Baddagana Wetland Park in Colombo.The photo shows a scenic view of a wooden boardwalk winding through lush green vegetation, leading to an observation tower with a thatched roof. Beddagana Wetland Park is an ecologically significant urban wetland located in the Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte area, close to the administrative capital of Sri Lanka, Colombo. It serves as a crucial natural habitat and a recreational space, playing an important role in conservation, biodiversity, and eco-tourism. 

Beddagana Wetland Park is situated within the Diyawanna Oya catchment area, on the eastern edge of the Colombo city limits. It lies in the Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte area, which is the official capital of Sri Lanka.

The park is adjacent to the Parliament Complex and is part of the Colombo Wetland Complex, which includes other significant wetlands like the Talangama Wetlands and the Kotte Marshes.

The park is easily accessible by road, being located close to major roads like Parliament Road. It is a short drive from central Colombo and is well-connected to other parts of the city.

             I took this photo at Kalaniya temple.This photo Kalaniya stupa, a dome-shaped Buddhist structure, set against a partly cloudy sky with a hint of golden sunlight. The stupa is the central focus, with its white surface contrasting against the blue sky. Surrounding the stupa are people, many dressed in white, indicating a possible religious or ceremonial gathering. The foreground shows a sandy area where some people are seated, while others are standing or walking around. On the left side, a traditional architectural structure with intricate carvings is partially visible, adding a historical and cultural context to the scene. The overall atmosphere is peaceful and reflective.
Kelaniya Raja Maha Vihara, is a significant Buddhist temple located in the Kelaniya suburb, about 7 kilometers northeast of Colombo, Sri Lanka. This temple is one of the most revered religious sites in the country due to its deep historical, cultural, and religious importance.

Ancient Origins
              The origins of the Kelaniya Stupa date back over 2,500 years. It is believed to have been established during the third and final visit of Lord Buddha to Sri Lanka in 500 BCE. According to legend, the stupa was built on the site where Lord Buddha visited and preached to the people, and where he left a seat imprint as a sacred relic.
Reconstruction: The stupa and the temple have undergone numerous renovations and restorations over the centuries, especially after invasions and natural disasters. One significant restoration occurred in the 18th century under the patronage of King Kirthi Sri Rajasinghe of the Kandyan Kingdom.
